The 1927 Yankees were the best. They had Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Earle Combs, Tony Lazzari, and Ruffing.

1954 Indians

best team to never win it all

could've won 120 games if the season hadnt been cut short

1998 Yankees were pretty darn good. They finished like 114-48 and won the World Series, and they had guys like Jeter, Knoblauch, O'Neal, Bernie, Posada, Brosius, Rivera, El Duque, Wells and David Cone

lol goyanks, that was cool you included Ruffing on the star players for Murderers Row, but he joined the Yankess 3 years later, in 1930.

I believe the best team was the 1932 Yankees were the best, 9 HOFs, Ruth, Gehrig, Dickey, Pennock, Ruffing, Gomez.....all of them.

Close are the '55 Dodgers and the '98Yankees

Pete Rose and the 1970's Big Red Machine has to be up there.

As does the 1869 Cincinnati Redstockings who went undefeated (they're up there just because of their record, not because they were as talented as some of the other teams).

But I have to agree with goyanks, the 1927 Yanks probably the best ever. I'd like to see a matchup with them and the 1960 Dodgers when Koufax and Drysdale were in their primes. It'd be cool to see if good pitching really beats good hitting.

EDIT: And best team in the past 15 years? '97 Marlins. They had an incredible amount of talent. Nen, Brown, Leiter, Sheffield, Renteria and World Series MVP Livan Hernandez just to name a few.

The 1998 Yankees were amazing team that year. They have won the season series against every team except the Anahaeim Angels. Of course they won the WS over the Pads.

Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, David Cone, David Wells, Jorge Posada just to name a few.

Thank you ! Finally someone realises the aura that surounds Sandy Koufax...even if it is from a Giants fan.

2001 Mariners in the past 15 years? 116 wins in regular season....

Yeah, Koufax is a really interesting story. You guys are coming up with a lot of good teams from the past 15 years so I think I'm going to make a poll on that to see what the rest of the site thinks.

Oops. I was watching a special pitcher yankeeography, nd I guess they said joined the Yankees in 30, not 27.

The game changes way too often to declare one team as being the best ever.

However, I find it interesting that the first thing out of a majority of baseball fans' mouths when asked the question is the '27 Yankees. Not only were they not the best team ever, they weren't even the best Yankees team of that decade...

"Murderer's Row" was not the best Yankees lineup either. While 1927 was arguably Gehrig's best offensive output, the lore surrounding the group was brought about because of Ruth's home run record, and while he did hit 60 homers, he had several seasons in which he peformed much better as an overall hitter.

I would say the best Yankees team of that era came from 1923. The team was centered around Babe Ruth, who put together his best season ever. He hit .393 and drew a freakish 170 BB's, to put his OBP at .545. He also stole 17 bases. Outside of defensive stalwart Everett Scott, who played shortstop, every member of the team hit over .276. Lou Gehrig was still behind Wally Pipp at that point, but hit .423 off the bench. The pitching was great as well, with guys like Herb Pennock, Joe Bush, Sam Jones, and Bob Shawkey.

As far as other teams that are WAY up there on my list...

1968 Detroit Tigers
1975 Cincinnati Reds
1954 Cleveland Indians
1906 Chicago Cubs (probably the best, IMO)
1998 New York Yankees
1919 Chicago White Sox (the best, if not the 1906 Cubs)
