Title: Awards
webgem924 - August 24, 2008 04:40 AM (GMT)
A friend of mine asked me whether or not baseball should have the Ted Williams award (best hitter) in addition to the Cy Young award (best pitcher) and MVP (most valuable).
I think it would be very logical for baseball to do so and it would be the right thing to do. The MVP is the only award hitters can qualify in and pitchers can qualify for both Cy Young and MVP. The Cy Young award would measure the statistics for pitchers; Ted Williams award measures hitting statistics; MVP measures sabremetrics and other stuff (vorp, etc) and shows how valuable a player is to his team.
Thoughts?

Wouldn't be a horrible idea, but I'd just rather make it MVP for hitters only and Cy Young for pitchers only. Starting pitchers even.

That's not a bad idea as long as relievers don't win the MVP.

I believe (and someone please feel free to correct me if I am wrong here) that Major League Baseball named the ASG MVP award after Ted Williams right after he died.

But then there would be that argument if say, 1968 were to happen again. Even though there is like a 1 in a million chance.
Anyway, isn't the Hank Aaron Award awarded to the best hitter in each league?

No. Theres already to many gay awards. Comeback player, RP of the year, rookie of the year, ALCs MVP. World series mvp. Stick with MVP and Cy Young. I'm sick of handing out awards like their candy.

MVP should only be for pitchers. Asking the BBWA to compare hitters with pitcher just too much for that retarded bunch of scat muchers to handle.
MVP should also be the best position player award. If you want to rename it, fine. This idea that writers can seperate "good" from "valuable" is stupid. "Well, Player A is the best in the league, but his team sucks. Therefore, I'll give it to Player B." Fuck that.
