Title: Top 5 Prospects
Description: w/ comparisons
Bo_ - August 10, 2008 03:43 AM (GMT)
I don't care that this is a weird time of the year to write up top prospect lists, we're doing it. Put your team's top 5 prospects w/ MLB player comps.
TWINS
1. Ben Revere OF - Ichiro w/out the arm
2. Shooter Hunt P - Kershaw?..
3. Aaron Hicks OF - Alex Rios
4. Wilson Ramos C - Kenji Johjima
5. Luke Hughes 3B/2B - Aaron Hill
Crushed Optimism - August 10, 2008 03:47 AM (GMT)
no one is ever going to be Ichiro. Unless you're God. I guess God comes relatively close, iono tho.
I hope Ramos = Johjima last year, not this year.
TheHugeUnit - August 10, 2008 03:48 AM (GMT)
Austin Jackson - Curtis Granderson
Jesus Montero - V-Mart with more power.
Mark Melancon - K-Rod, but without the ADD
Zachary McAllister - Don't really have one for him.
Dellin Betances - Mike Mussina

Ichiro isn't God, but Revere figures more to be Ichiro in something of an off year. Like 03 Ichiro w/ the arm of a girl scout.
And yes, I was thinking more 06/07 Johjima.
Crushed Optimism - August 10, 2008 04:10 AM (GMT)
Mariners:
1. Carlos Triunfel - SS, a good Miguel Tejada
2. Wladimir Balentien - RF, I really like this kid. Has the raw power to hit the ball out of the world, last night he hit a ball like 430 feet and it looked effortless in Safeco. He needs to improve his plate disipline, and he plays pretty good defense with a good arm, but needs some experience definitely. Scouts love the guy. I don't have a comp for him. He could easily hit 30 homers in the Majors in a couple years.
3. Phillipe Aumont - RHP, upside of Chris Carpenter, and it's hard to give him a good comp right now because he's only 19 and super raw. Kevin Brown? Brad Penny?
others: I really like Catcher Adam Moore, and OF's Michael Saunders and Greg Halman.
Clement would be one or 2 on this, but he's technically not a spec anymore.

jaysdude09 - August 10, 2008 04:24 AM (GMT)
1) Snider- Hafner of 04-06
2) Cecil- John Danks but more K's. An optimistic upside is Scott Kazmir if he Cecil can get a tick or 2 on that fastball.
3) David Cooper- A-Gon with more power and more walks.
4) JP Arencibia- Hmm, think Pierzynski of 06 with a bit more power, and less average. .280/20HR. He'll have more HR than walks?
5) Purcey- Jorge De La Rosa, but much better.
Marlinschamps03 - August 10, 2008 04:24 AM (GMT)
Hard to do comps since I'm not that good at stuff like that but my Marlins top 5 is
1. Cam Maybin-stuggled a bit with K's and has a bit of an injury issue lately but still amazingly talented
2. Logan Morrison-Really starting to like this kid, he's been raking all year even though his power isn't great yet, he's hitting for a high average in a pitchers league
3. Matt Dominguez-Zimm like defense and has hit pretty good considering his late start due to Mono
4. Mike Stanton-Powerful, athletic OF who's K'd a lot
5. Chris Coghlan-Good average hitting 2B with not much power who walks more then he K's
Stats for each this season (in order)
Age Level Team PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG OBP SLG OPS
21 AA Carolina 394 338 63 93 12 7 13 42 49 105 .275 .366 .467 833
20 A+ Jupiter 470 409 62 142 34 1 13 67 46 65 .347 .413 .531 944
18 A Greensboro 284 257 41 75 11 0 9 42 21 48 .292 .352 .440 792
18 A Greensboro 450 392 70 111 24 2 29 73 41 128 .283 .363 .577 940
23 AA Carolina 481 417 73 127 30 4 6 62 54 50 .305 .394 .439 833
Tucker is probably next and our best pitching prospect at the moment. I still consider him a prospect since he's back in AA now as a reliever.

Well McCann is pretty good behind the plate from what I've read. Montero has some question marks like V-Mart.

LOL
win2day - August 10, 2008 04:38 AM (GMT)
lol, hahah.
Austin Jackson- BJ Upton, 30/30 type guy, although Upton has sucked this year.
Montero- V-Mart, a good amount of people compare his bat to Piazza's, which in its prime was better than V-Mart's, but V-Mart seems like a good comp.
Melancon- Soria
Betances- I don't know, maybe Chris Young with more stuff
McAlister- James Shields
Edgar For Mayor - August 10, 2008 09:28 PM (GMT)
Truinfel - Not really a Major league comparison right now, though I guess Tejada in his Oakland days would be close.
Halman - A lesser Andruw Jones...old Jones not now Jones.
Aumont - Ben Sheets.
Saunders - Alex Rios with less power.
Rabin - Lesser Pat Burrell A guess.
Jaun Ramirez - No idea
Papelmate - August 10, 2008 10:10 PM (GMT)
1. lars anderson probably albert pujols
2. michael bowden maybe greg maddux with more conttrol
3. justin masterson hes webb with a better sinker

5. michael almanzar plays 3B so hes like a-rod but better hitting
Rockshu - August 10, 2008 10:23 PM (GMT)
Snider -- Travis Hafner
Cecil -- If he starts, John Danks. If he closes, Brad Lidge
Ahrens -- Edwin Encarnation
Arencibia -- Javy Lopez
Jackson -- Troy Tulowitzki with less power
.Atmosphere - August 10, 2008 10:40 PM (GMT)
jordan danks-jacoby ellsbury with a higher OBP, less range, and more power.
gordon beckham-aaron hill

KeepTheFaith - August 11, 2008 01:00 AM (GMT)
soxprospects comparisons:
Michael Bowden - Jeff Suppan
Lars Anderson - Says James Loney, but from scouting reports more like Carlos Delgado
Josh Reddick - Paul O'neill
Michael Almanzar - Jorge Cantu

Most of the comparisons make me laugh more than want to research players more (like Papelmates saying that unknowns can have better sinkers than Brandon Webb and more control than Greg Maddux).
But anyway, here's mine for SF, who's minors owns all of yours for once:
1. Tim Alderson- Greg Maddux
2. Madison Bumgarner- Oliver Perez
3. Buster Posey- Ryan Doumit, maybe Russel Martin
4. Nate Schierholz- Jeff Francoeur
5. Angel Villalona- Troy Glaus

A-Rod but better hitting? Good jokes.
Bo_ - August 11, 2008 02:18 AM (GMT)
Some of these seem really optimistic, but I guess that's the point of following prospects. Hope.
You can tell pap's is a joke because there isn't a human more intense the papabon.

LOL @ some of these comparisons I just read. 90% of those you guys said will never be as good as the compared player.
papelmate was obviously being sarcastic but it's really not that much different from what some people are spewing.

If you're referring to me, then Holt doesn't throw sidearm, and his fastball is just as good if not better than Lincecum. It was consistantly 95-97 even in the ninth inning in college, with good movement. And he's struck out 61 batters in 47.1 IP so far this year with it, so yeah.
Crushed Optimism - August 12, 2008 04:11 AM (GMT)
Guys, comparisons don't mean we think they will be like them when they make it to the show... It's just comparing players with a similar tool set.

Marlinschamps03 - August 27, 2008 03:02 PM (GMT)
Cam, Stanton, and Dominguez are kinda interchangable for me but all are awesome. Morrisons had the best year easily, he's a beast.
