Title: Braves close on Bay

TheHugeUnit - July 28, 2008 05:42 PM (GMT)
The Braves scored 27 runs during this past weekend's series in Philadelphia and won just once. Things certainly might have been different had they had Chipper Jones and Jason Bay in their lineup.

Jones was sidelined by a strained left hamstring and Bay was stuck in Pittsburgh because Pirates ownership was reluctant to move him.

Before the start of Friday's game, many of the Braves players were asking about Bay. Some were under the impression that they were going to walk into the clubhouse that day and find him to be their newest teammate.

But a proposed deal, which would have brought Bay to Atlanta in exchange for four Minor Leaguers, was killed when presented to the Pirates owners for approval.

Still as the week progresses, the Braves will continue to pursue Bay, who is set to earn $7.5 million during the final year of his contract next year.

The Pirates would have a definite interest in shortstop Brent Lillibridge, who they developed before trading him to the Braves in exchange for Adam LaRoche last year.

In addition, they'd likely ask for Brandon Jones, who would be considered a Major League-ready outfielder. He hit .278 (15-for-54) with seven extra-base hits, including a homer, in 16 games with Atlanta earlier this year.

To complete the deal the Braves would likely also have to include one of their talented young pitchers from the Class A level and another marginal position player.

I think maybe Lillibridge being traded from the Pirates might of hurt the deal. Jones, Locke, Hicks and Evarts maybe?

if we trade Teix for a major league ready 1B like Kotchman, and get Bay, and sign some good pitchers, our team can be great in 2009.

Your pitching staff is horrible bro.

Smoltz is done as a starter, Glavine blows, Hampton blows.

It's pretty much Hudson, Jurrjens, then shit.

Personally, I see the title line of this article -- " The Braves scored 27 runs during this past weekend's series in Philadelphia and won just once" as a huge sign that the Braves need pitching, not another bat. Another bat isn't going to do a whole lot if your team scores 9 runs a game in a series and still can't win.

Yeah haha I couldn't figure out why he even put that in there if he was trying to make the point that the Braves need pitching.

and that's why we could sign CC, Lowe, Sheets this offseason...

Yes, your 100% correct. I don't understand why more teams do this? Braves have a nice shell, they need to get some wheels moving on the team though. Better to get a jump start now, IMO. Plus you have a better chance this year and keep the fans happier longer.

The Braves gave up 3 studs for Tex in Feliz, Andrus, and Salty. They aren't getting anything near that in a trade for him now.

I would trade Tex regardless, because he isn't coming back. The Braves have some pitching prospects in Locke, Rourghbrough, Teheran that could be up in 3-4 years. I say go for young hitting that can compliment that pitching when they come up.

Have a couple of rebuilding seasons.

They asked for Tracy, Parker and Scherzer for Tex.

They'd be lucky to get one of Parker or Scherzer right now. Part of the reason why Texas got so much more was because it wasn't a rental, they could have Tex for 1.5 years. Now its just .5 years, so the value went down three folds.
