Title: Ridiculous GM Quote of the Day
Description: Brought to you by Billy Smitts

From a Charley Walters column in the Pioneer Press in St. Paul. Sorry I don't have a link steve.

QUOTE (Bill Smith)
Twins general manager Bill Smith, on Livan Hernandez, who improved to 10-6 with a 5.29 earned-run average with Saturday's victory over Texas: "I'll take the (10) wins. Who do you want, a guy who's 10-15 with a 2.80 ERA or a guy who's 16-8 with a 7.00 ERA? I'll take the 16-8."

Whats wrong with it? If the team gets more wins out of a pitcher isn't that more important to the team?

I might be missing something blatantly obvious though.

Maybe.

Is he talking about the pitcher or the record?

I'm about to use stats that were only true before Livan's last start. He has the worst opponents BA, and OPS of any AL pitcher. His ERA is over 5. He has the sixth best run support in the AL. So, unless you believe Livan possesses some sort of hidden intangible that causes his team's offense to score more runs, he's terrible by all metrics.

As a Twins fan I'm happy that he's won 10 games. But he's been straight up lucky, and it's just not going to continue. Now, I can understand if Bill Smith said that just to stay positive and stay in tune with the company line, but if he truly measures his starting pitchers by win loss record, I think that's just dumb.

A GM would rather win games than lose them I am shocked at this development

Livan doesn't win games, the offense has happened to win them when he pitched.

I do see what youre saying though, he's happy livan is "winning", I just hope he can see that it's a flash in the pan.

If Billy drops or trades Livan by the deadline in favor of Liriano joining the rotation, I'll forgive him.

Run Support:

Livan: 5.9 runs, 5.29 ERA

Perkins: 5.8 runs, 3.84 ERA

Slowey: 5.4 runs, 4.26 ERA

Blackburn: 4.7 runs, 3.65 ERA

Baker: 4.4 runs, 3.26 ERA

Go Livan!

Well take into account the no decisions that both pitchers get. 100% sure the team wins more games of the no decisions of the 2.80 pitcher.

soxfan#1 - July 21, 2008 04:19 AM (GMT)
Alright pitching wise I want the 2.80 ERA, but if you're about to do a full year sim and you have a guy guaranteed to go 16-8 instead of a 10-15 guy for that one year I take the 16-8 guy.

Bo_ - July 21, 2008 03:59 PM (GMT)
Yeah, he might just be saying he'd rather win than have pitchers with pimped out stats, I just hope that doesn't mean Livan is staying.
