Title: You current top 10?

TheHugeUnit - June 9, 2008 12:19 AM (GMT)
With the draft in the past, I am very interested to see how your guys think your first rounders fall in your top 10. If you could be so kind to post what you think your top 10 prospect list would look like now. To make it easier, only include your 1st rounder(s).

I'll give it a go with the Yankees.

1. Jesus Montero, He's just pure beast.
2. Austin Jackson, He's been great far. He is starting to break out of his 4 game slump.
3. Dellin Betances, He came back this year and proved a lot. His walks are still high, but he is getting better. He has doubled his innings he threw in the previous 3 seasons already, so the Yankees shut him down about 3 weeks ago. He should be coming back soon though.
4. Abe Almonte, He is what you dream about in a prospect. You want to talk about a five tool prospect on his way? Talk about Abe.
5. Alan Horne, Got hurt to start the year, came back strong after a two month lay over today. He's got incredible stuff. Foru, count 'em one, two, three FOUR plus pitches. I'd have him higher if he didn't get hurt though.
6. Mark Melancon, Probably the best closer like prospect in the minor leagues. He still slowly getting his velocity back. I've heard 94. Once he gets to 95, watch out. He has wicked curveball to boot. He is an extremely fast learner. He spent a little less than a month in DR and picked up Spanish, he is able to speak it pretty damn good too. Should help if the Yankees have a spanish speaking catcher.
7. Gerrit Cole, What? A 17 year old kid armed with a weapon such as his fastball, isn't enough? Its suggested his problems with others was a smoke screan so he could fall. Also he is only 17 and if you hear him speak, you'd think he is 10. He ha a high pitch voice. I don't think its a big deal if he is cocky at 17, he should be if he throws 98 and if you beleive the rumors of 103.
8. Brett Garnder, he reinvented his swing in the AFL. He now is hitting for a bit more power and is still able to draw walks. His speed is VERY interesting as he leads the league with 23 SB(through 6/8)
9. Austin Romine, One of the best defensive catchers you'll see. A cannon arm. High upside power. He's been hitting the ball well too.
0. Andrew Brackman, yes I'll leave him here at number. He certainly has me excited. Last year I was talking that his TJ has basically made it like the Yankees getting two first rounders this year in Cole and Brackman. Brackman is already long tossing and has been down in tampa from day one trying to get ready. He has already bonded well with teammates in ST he was part of a prank war and during April he house sat for Joba. His big frame, electric stuff make him mind numbing good.

I'd have Chris Dywer 8th, if he signs and Garnder 9th with Romine exiting the top 10. Dwyer a high school lefty who throws mid 90s with great breaking stuff. Tabata is in time out in my mind, although he is getting red hot in double-A. I probably made the mistake by dropping him down and then forgeting him. I'd have him on the list, but I just don't know who I'd vote off, probably Brackman though, due to he is still out with TJ.

I have to agree about Jesus. The kids like what, 18 years old? He's going to be an all star someday. An untouchable in the Yankees farm.

Jackson, him too. Some say he's the best athlete in our system. One of those "do it all kids". Should be a gem.

Betances, I'm not sure. He's got the raw stuff, but thats all it is right now. Raw. If he finds it (becomes a pitcher more than a thrower) he's got ace written all over him. Called, "the Baby Unit" for his size and fastball.

Almonte, like you said, he's got it all. I'd put him ahead of Betances just because I don't think Dellin has clicked yet.

Humbero Sanchez. Yeah I know he doesn't pitch, but I have some really high hopes for the kid. Could be the solution to our "lost" setup man when he comes back.

Andrew Brackman: Pure everything. Kid can pitch, I'm excited

Brett Garnder: I love basepath terror. Brett Gardner brings it. Showing more pop this season with a great OBP. If played a full season in MLB, he's a 70 SB candidate.

Alan Horne: I think he's having an off year, but there is still time. Awesome arsenal should keep his hopes alive and well.

Romaine: As you said, from what I hear, the kid can catch. Not sure about his offensive skills, but kids got a canon of an arm. Comparisons to Pudge behind the plate, from what I've heard.

Montero is already an all star. ;)

Jackson's athleticism is commonly compared to LaDainian Tomlinson

an all-star at the MLB level.

all in all, I'm so excited about our future. If we have to endure a losing season or two to witness the bright future ahead of us, I'm more than game.

1. Jesus Montero- I agree, he's been very good for the Yankees, and his production to position value is tremendous. He's been pretty decent behind the plate as well.

2. Austin Jackson- Has been good, although not great, so far this season. He has all the tools, and I look for him to go on a tear soon.

3. Alan Horne- I put him here because of how close he is to the big leagues. 4 plus pitches, and the fact that he's already in AAA. If it wasn't for the injury, he would be up right now instead of Rasner.

4. Dellin Betances- tremendous raw potential, although his walk rates have been pretty alarming. Hopefully he's healthy now, and can work on his walk rate. Most of the other things are there for him to dominate now.

5. Abraham Almonte: When he has played this year, he's been exciting. Love the power/speed combo, although his size leaves some questions open to his power lasting.

6. Jose Tabata- I know he's been sucking this year, and his attitude problems have surfaced, but he still has very good talent, and is doing decent as of late.

7. Mark Melancon- Really good stuff and advanced approach. I love how he pitches, and he could be up by the end of this year.

8. Autin Romine- has been hitting the ball good this year, although in a slump of late, and is really good behind the plate. He makes it because of his position moreso than anything else. He doesn't have the upside of Montero, but he's nasty behind the plate, and has good offensive potential.

9. Brett Gardner- Mainly because of how close he is to the majors, and also because he fills a major need for the team in the speed category. He can swipe bases at will, and can steal bases when the other team knows we need a stolen base, a quality the MLB team lacks IMO.

10. Arodis Vizcaino- as a 16 year old, he can get his fastball in the mid 90's and a nasty curveball. I like him better than Cole, mainly because his secondary pitches are better as of now.

Gerrit Cole- Love his arm, although don't love his mechanics, and the fact that his best secondary pitch is inconsistant. I could see Nardi throwing out the slider and teaching him the curve as they did with Hughes.

Andrew Brackman- again, very good arm, but I'm not sold on him being elite yet. I think he's a project. He was never flat out nasty in college. He has some mechanical issues as well. Also, being that tall means he may have to over-extend his arm to get the ball down, and that may cause shoulder problems in the future. I want to see what the Yankees are going to do with him first. Is he in the bullpen or the rotation? If they teach him a new pitch, and change his mechanics.

I disagree. Rasner has been good man.

I disagree. Rasner has been good man.

Rasner would have never gotten a shot, had Horne been healthy.

Rasner was behing Horne and Marquez IMO to be long term options this season. Horne got hurt, and Marquez has struggled so far, which is why Rasner got the shot. Heck, they even gave Igawa a shot before Rasner.

TheHugeUnit - June 9, 2008 04:49 AM (GMT)
The Razzler had an .88 ERA in triple-A and has been up before and done well. I beleive Igawa was called up since he was basically in lined with that start.

I'm no scout but

1) Ben Revere
2)Shooter Hunt
3)Deolis Guerra
4)Aaron Hicks
5)Anthony Swarzak
6)Carlos Gutierrez
7)Tyler Robertson
8)Kevin Mulvey
9)Chris Parmelee
10)Rene Tosoni

I don't write comments. that's not how I roll.

They were only going to give him a spot start if Horne was healthy. I don't think they trusted Rasner's stuff that much, and I really don't think they trust it that much right now. If he has 3 bad starts, I think he's going back down. Or atleast claimed of waivers.

1) Gordon Beckham-Quick wrists, plus bat speed, possible good range and a strong arm, I'm sure he will put up monster numbers his first in rookie ball.

2) Jordan Danks-I hope he does develop that power soon, but I think he will be a very good leadoff hitter with great speed, defense, and patience.

3) Aaron Poreda-A very hard thrower for a lefty, best pitch is his sinker, still a little raw mechanically since he didn't pitch full time till college, breaking pitches inconsistent due to his 3/4 arm slot, White Sox looking to have him throw over the top which will take some speed off of his fastball but improve the consistency of his breaking pitches. This season will decide if he will be a RP or a SP.

4) Jack Egbert-plus changeup, fast worker, not afraid to work inside, doesn't have a good fastball though, potentially plus slider, groundball pitcher who usually doesn't have a high pitch count in starts.

5) Lance Broadway-Also has a plus change, plus curveball, has tried the cutter, fastball barely average,

6) Brent Morel-From the videos I have seen of him he has a great swing.

7) Jose Martinez-Best positional prospect we have, uses whole field pretty well, good speed, does pull the ball, and plus arm and power potential.

8) John Ely-Average fastball, with good movement, improving curveball and plus change, may have problems with durability.

9) Juan Silverio-Potential 5-tool player, strong upper body with a good arm and good speed and footwork.

10) John Shelby Jr.-Good on base skills, should be a future #2 hitter and if his power develops even more may be a #4-6 hitter.

I am not overly well versed in the Rays minor league system, but here's what I'd say it'd look like:

1. Evan Longoria - still a rookie so I'll count him. BEAST. Locked up, too.
2. David Price - A-Rod wished he were a Yank. He's going to come up and dominate.
3. Wade Davis - Good mindset, projects to be a #2 starter, if not an ace
4. Tim Beckham - I love his tools and his position. Future looks so bright with young talent. Longoria at 3B, Upton CF, Beckham SS.
5. Jacob McGee - I am still dreaming about my future rotation with 3 dominant left handed starters in Kazmir, Price, and McGee. Sprinkle in Davis, Shields, Garza, Hellickson, Lobstein... nice!
6. Desmond Jennings - probably the most athletic guy in the organization other then Crawford. I like his tools. Future right fielder perhaps?
7. Reid Brignac - another shortstop prospect, used to be more highly touted. Still has a bright future. Mind see a position change if Beckham advances well.
8. Kyle Lobstein - Was very happy with this pick and surprised he fell to us at #47 overall. Yet another solid lefty. Maybe he'll join up with the other 3 and make it a lefty foursome.
9. Jeremy Hellickson - good numbers, he has been on the radar for a while. Hopefully he can come up and contribute.
10. Jacob Jefferies - Throwing him in here because I really want a catching prospect that is legit... perhaps wishful thinking. We've also got Jaso in the system to hope for. Jefferies has got a great eye and makes outstanding contact with good defense.

I am very excited about Beckham. Makes me think of a cross between Young and Upton, playing at a premium position with solid defense.

Ahrens is meh. Those other "guys" aren't even hitting above 240....

jaysdude09 - June 10, 2008 09:10 PM (GMT)
Yea but their still young. Atleast Jackson's taking some walks, but Chavez has got to show some life soon.

TheHugeUnit - June 10, 2008 09:17 PM (GMT)
I mean its ok to name a youngster or two, but one who is barely hitting 200. Come on man I thought you were smart enough not to bring me that.
