MINNEAPOLIS -- Right-hander Bryan Corey is getting the opportunity to resume his Major League career, but this time it'll be in the National League.

The Red Sox on Sunday traded Corey to the San Diego Padres for a player to be named or cash considerations. Corey had a 10.50 ERA through seven appearances in two different stints with the Red Sox. He pitched five scoreless innings in five outings for Triple-A Pawtucket after being assigned outright on April 30.

Boston manager Terry Francona said that he's happy for the opportunity that Corey will get with the Padres.

"You don't want to lose pitching, but guys like that, you want the best for them," Francona said. "It's a good day for him, a real good day."

Right-hander Jose Vaquedano was promoted from Double-A Portland to Pawtucket to fill the Triple-A roster spot.
