BOSTON -- Red Sox ace Josh Beckett was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday because of a stiff neck.

The team didn't say whether Beckett would miss his turn in the rotation or if he would return before his next scheduled start.

David Pauley was summoned from Triple-A Pawtucket. Pauley, 24, made three starts for Boston last season and allowed 14 runs on 31 hits in 16 innings. He is 1-1 with a 1.17 ERA in three starts this season for Pawtucket.

Infielder Joe Thurston was designated for assignment to make room for Pauley on the 25-man roster.

I heard on the news that the stiff neck related to flu-like symptoms that have been going around the team this season. According to Channel 5 (WCVB in Boston) Varitek is not available tonight, so Cash will again be behind the plate with Peds as the backup.
