Pedro Martinez left Tuesday's game in the fourth inning with a strained left hamstring. Martinez came up lame while delivering a pitch and exited after allowing four runs in 3 1/3 innings. He relied a surprising amount on a fastball in the 85-89 mph range and serving up a pair of homers when he left pitches over the plate. If he needs a DL stint, which seems likely, the Mets could go to Jorge Sosa for a spot start. Since Orlando Hernandez pitched in a major league game on Friday, he's not going to be eligible to return for another 12 days. Between the four runs and an injury it wasn't a good night, but Pedro did draw a standing ovation from a Mets-heavy road crowd after striking out to end a 12-pitch at-bat. |

If you didnt see this coming...
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 02:32 AM (GMT)
It didn't look horrible. He was able to walk off under his own power and he didn't grimace too bad.
TheHugeUnit - April 2, 2008 02:35 AM (GMT)
He said he felt a pop so he should be out for at least 6 weeks.
Rockshu - April 2, 2008 02:35 AM (GMT)
I'm watching the game and one of the dudes talked to Pedro and he said he heard a "pop" when it happens. 6-8 weeks, book it.

My post is longer therefore I started typing first.

I don't think so. Who's this "guy"? I've been watching the entre game...nothing so far.

That should tell me it's false already.
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 02:46 AM (GMT)
It was Burkhardt. That's for real then. Mazzilli said 4-6 weeks.
TheHugeUnit - April 2, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)
No I kid you not, I was watching sny or something like that. They had an update on him and the guy said pedro was limping out of the stadium on his way to new york and the guy said I asked him what happened and he said well it popped.
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 02:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah it was Burkhardt. Maybe he'll miss 3 starts or so, it's not a big deal.

Yeah, he said he was skipping the post game interview and flying to NY for his MRI right away. 6 weeks is a few more than 3 starts.
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
Yeah, because it's six weeks automatically...
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 03:11 AM (GMT)
If it's 4 weeks, 3 starts. 6 weeks isn't more then 5.
Rockshu - April 2, 2008 03:20 AM (GMT)
4 weeks = 28 days. If you pitch once every 5 days, that's a little over 5 starts. Accounting for off days, lets call it 5 starts.
6 weeks = 42 days. If you pitch once every 5 days, that's a little over 8 starts. Again, accounting for off days, lets call it 8 starts.
8 weeks = 56 days. If you pitch once every 5 days, that's a little over 11 starts. Again, accounting for off days, let's call it 11 starts.
You're 4-6 week timetable means he'll miss 5-8 starts. My 6-8 week timetable means he'll miss 8-11 starts. Roy Halladay had an appendectomy last year and missed just over 2 weeks, but still missed 3 starts.
Iluvkm15 - April 2, 2008 03:26 AM (GMT)
This is gonna sound mean, but I am so glad he is not with the Sox anymore. He was great while he was here, but now he has had one injury after another.
win2day - April 2, 2008 03:38 AM (GMT)
He lasted 2 more innings than I thought.
Yeah, I mean look at Hughes last year. It wasn't half as bad as Pedro's injury and he missed like 2 months (although the last 2 weeks were from an ankle injury). It looked pretty bad on tv. 4-6 weeks might be optimistic considering his age.

Even the Mets commentators were like "Whatever they tell you for the injury time, double it, and add a week for his age".
win2day - April 2, 2008 03:52 AM (GMT)
Well, I guess Mike Pelfrey will get a nice shot at losing games now even when El Duque comes back.
zackboomer - April 2, 2008 04:40 AM (GMT)
He should just quit. He had a good career in his prime.

Why would a Marlins fan care about a Mets pitcher?
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 07:08 PM (GMT)
He's feels "fine" today. No limp at all...he may not even be placed on the DL, but until results of the MRI come out, we won't know for sure.
Bloss - April 2, 2008 07:17 PM (GMT)
Every player says he feels fine.. no one wants to be on the DL in less your Carl Palvano
Mets Rule - April 2, 2008 07:21 PM (GMT)
It was Andrew Marchand of ESPN Radio that sat next to Pedro and walked around with him. He didn't limp once.
