Title: Baseball players who wear their hat tilted

Mets Rule - March 20, 2008 03:29 AM (GMT)
It drives me insane. It shows a sort of cockiness and arrogance, and a need to be different then their teammates, to stand out. A uniform is meant to be worn by the entire team, the same way. They don't need to be different. That being said, CC Sabathia, Dontrelle Willis, and Felix Hernandez are all arrogant.

They don't let you wear your hat backwards, or upside down, do they? Why is having it on an angle any different? Wear it straight, the normal way. You make a mockery of your team when it's worn tilted.

Crushed Optimism - March 20, 2008 04:04 AM (GMT)
Wow who fucking cares.

That's just like saying everyone should get a buzz cut so everyone looks the same. Or no one can wear their sox high. If someone wants to be an individual, they can be. If the coach doesn't have a problem with it, neither do I.

Wrong. Wearing high socks or having a buzz cut is a style...wearing your hat tilted is for attention, and nothing else. There's no reason that you need your hat tilted. Much different then wearing socks high, or a haircut? Not everyone needs to look the same...both they don't need to try and draw attention to themselves by trying to look good. It's not a good mentality. If someone had their hat crooked on my team, while I was coaching, they wouldn't play until it was on straight.

Man of strict principles.

braveschopbraves - March 20, 2008 05:08 AM (GMT)
I believe Toronto made Orlando Hudson wear his hat straight ahead a few years ago.

LOL! Listen to yourself. Doing one thing with your uniform is a style, but doing another thing with your uniform isn't? That's just a bias statement. It's a style, whether it's an ugly one or not doesn't matter.

Well that's one reason you're not a coach. If you can't pick and choose your battles, you'd be terrible.

Rockshu - March 20, 2008 06:08 PM (GMT)
It pisses me off when they have their beaks flat or hats sideways but I don't think it should be mandatory for them to be straight and bent.

oeshbach - March 20, 2008 06:28 PM (GMT)
I could care less. If they want to look like an idiot, its fine with me.

nath87 - March 20, 2008 06:33 PM (GMT)
lol let them do what they want with their uniform and hats..

jaysdude09 - March 20, 2008 09:33 PM (GMT)
Don't care at all what their hats look like. Maybe its just superstition for some players.

I'd say it's more because he is partially blind, nothing's changed about that last I checked, but for him it was about the shadows, has it tilted so there'd be more shadows on the bad eye, less light, less distraction.

But all of my other points have been taken, such as that one thing is a style thing and that's ok, but this isn't, etc etc.

.Atmosphere - March 21, 2008 02:09 AM (GMT)
wow really if it bothers you that much just change the channel every time they pitch. anyways, at our school we have to wear them straight, but we can have flat brimmed hats, just no one really has it like that.

Rockshu - March 21, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
The dude's blind? Who is he?

Abe Alvarez, former hot prospect for the Sox, one of those "can't miss" prospects that missed. He's legally blind in his left eye if I remember correctly, can still make out shadows and such, so he's not completely blind in that eye. Right eye's fine though.

Rockshu - March 21, 2008 03:02 AM (GMT)
How the hell do you play baseball with poor depth perception?

Crushed Optimism - March 21, 2008 03:13 AM (GMT)
Last year the M's brought in a guy that got shot in the eye with a shotgun but still pitched having one eye (in ST)

No...why would I want to stand out? I don't need to draw extra attention to myself. People who wear their hat crooked want extra attention to be drawn to them. Oh, and I saw Greg Aquino for the Orioles today on TV...looked like a fucking wanna be gangsta. Even Keith Hernandez made a comment on it.

Guess you just have to make adjustments, if it's something you've lived with, it's probably a lot easier than if you or I were to have it happen to us now. Although that could help explain why he's fallen to shit.

So are you also opposed to them wearing high socks, or catchers wearing the hockey style mask rather than the typical catchers mask? I mean those are things that make them stand out as well.

But it's different. You know what I mean. A crooked hat is trying to get attention. And if I sound racist, I'm not, but that's typically a black gangster type thing. Having a different type of helmet or wearing socks high, not so much.

No, it isn't different at all actually, it's exactly the same. I can see the hockey style mask with a practical use, provides more protection. But high socks are the same as wearing your hat differently. It's all about what you prefer, and it can get more attention on you, but hey, wearing your socks high isn't a typical black thing, so that may be why you're ok with it.

Hockey helmets -- better protection
Sunglasses -- see better during the day
High socks -- throw back to the players of the past
Sideways hat -- ??

All the other things mentioned are either a key piece of equipment or were done by the great players of the past. You can't really lump wearing your hat sideways into that group. Just sayin'.
