Title: Who Will Win the A.L. East?
nath87 - March 13, 2008 07:06 PM (GMT)
Alright, let's here the opinions of everyone on the board as to why they think a certain team will win the A.L East. At the end of the year it will be neat to see how 'accurate' DHB was at predicting the winner of the A.L. East.
I will post my reasons as to why I think the Jays will win the A.L. East a bit later when I am more awake.

New York Yankees, I can't find another team with a better mixture of youth and expirence in the majors. From A-Rod, Jeter, Mo and Pettitte, to the middle guys such as Cano and Wang to the young guns with Joba, Hughes and Melky. They have what they need(bullpen help) in the minor leagues just waiting to get a chance. I love this teams depth as well.

At first I thought the Sox would win it again, but I've grown to thinking that the Yankees will win it.

I'm going to enjoy seeing Yankees' fans dreams crushed, once again. Red Sox destroy them...especially in pitching, it's not even close. They've got Wang as their ace (lol), Jeter covering a 2 foot range at short, Rivera will be a disaster this year, and Pettitte is, yet, ANOTHER year older.
Oh, and Melky is, and always will be, a fourth outfielder.
OriolesManiac88 - March 13, 2008 08:37 PM (GMT)
The Boston Red Sox, with the Yanks and Jays just missing out on the playoffs.
Buchholz08 - March 13, 2008 08:45 PM (GMT)
I am having a really hard time deciding. The Sox have 1 ace out until @ least the ASB, another ace who is not making the trip to Japan because of back issues and a SS and a backup CF also out because of back issues.
That being said, I strongly feel it's going to be close.

If Phil Hughes wins the Cy Young I will chop my balls off. And I like my balls a lot.

Is Schilling the ace? Because if it is, he's in no way ace like material. He sucks.

Why the jays will win the east:
A healthy Rotation for the jays is a scary one for any opponnent.
Halladay/Burnett/Marcum/Mgowan/Litsch is a nasty combo. They are going to do great out there. Last years pitching stats back it up, they were one of the best in the american league.
Vernon Wells, His shoulder is looking like it's brand new out there this spring training. He has the shoulder strength back and is ready for another monster season. When he has a monster season, everyone else in the lineup benefits as well.
Accardo / B.J. Ryan: What a way to close out the 8th and 9th innings. They are going to be the most dominant closing punch in the A.L.
Ecstein/Rolen: They have been winners together in the past. They get along together great and they add that much neede grit that the jays have needed to grind out a season.
The Bench: It's probably one of the best benches to have. Matt Stairs is Mr. Clutch. He can play whenever he is called upon, he proved that last year. McDonald with that great glove. Who wouldn't want him on your bench?
Downs: Don't forget Scott... he is a great pitcher and he really is undervalued. Lok out for him to have another breakout season.
Rios: CONTRACT YEAR. need I say more ? he is only going tobuild upon his success and he will become one of the elite in baseball. We got a glimpse of it at the home run hitting contest last allstar game.
Where is the weakest spot on the team? That is a hard one to figure out. Catcher is probably the weakest position on the team. If Zaun goes out for an extended period of time there is no true backup. But, Zaun can also be oneof the strongest players in the field, as a lot of the pitchers respect him and love the way he calls the games.
Oh yes, there is a lot too look foward too as a Jays fan this year.

I think Boston and New York will both make the playoffs but Boston will win the division. Most depth, solid offense from last year will be much better this year (Manny, Drew and Ortiz had down years, Ellsbury will be in for Crisp). Best bullpen by far and a better rotation than New York's, although Toronto's rotation could rival Boston's.
The Blue Jays will not win the AL East. Their offense just doesn't even come close to Boston's or New York's and they probably made a downgrade offensively switching Glaus for Rolen. Although they have a quality rotation there's not too much else going for them right now.

Now, see, this is the best analysis of the Blue Jays' chances yet posted here this spring by a Blue Jays fan.
Know why? Because McGowan is listed as the fourth starter.

My take: Boston and New York are too close to call, and the Blue Jays and Rays are too close to rule out, especially for the first four months.
It'll be a good year in the AL East. I'd rather look at an obvious Red Sox triumph...I'll vote Red Sox, as having the best chance, but that "best chance" is less than 50% given the excellence of the division.

Sox, Yanks could get wild card though...
