Title: Retractable Roofs
hankaaron44 - January 25, 2006 03:33 AM (GMT)
Some people say that outdoor stadiums r much better because in a stadium with a retractable roof, u can barely let any wind in and allow prevailing winds ( Chicago ). They say that a true stadiums is suppoesed to have one or two rain delays where the field is just flooded. That's what they consider as " ballpark greatness "
Others may argue that u should refrain from alwyas postponing games because it could disrupt the winning streak of a team. Some teams use closing the roof to keep the noise in as an advantage ( Houston ). It is also considered a wonder to see a roof open or close.
BigPapi06 - January 25, 2006 03:44 AM (GMT)
I would much rather have retractable roofs, than postpone games.

sidthekid87 - January 26, 2006 01:02 AM (GMT)
The new retrqactable roofs that are not like skydome are awesome...skydome feels like u r inside even when it is open...i would like a roof that retracts all the way down to below the bleachers..i think if it was designed right t would be cool..but skydome was a huge disappointment...

I understand ur point, however, I have to agree with the architects' descision to leave a panel covering the warning track and a little more. It is a great place to hang up the World Series banners or rafters or whatever u call 'em these days. The only bad thing is that when the close the roof, and back when they still used fireworks after a homer as hit, u couldn't see the banners but isn't that also why the banners get beiger and beiger every year ?

26 million is a lot of money plus repairs and stuff you could pay off the Rays payroll with that
hankaaron44 - January 30, 2006 12:46 AM (GMT)
I know u live there in the area so do u know if the Twins want the Metrodome lease terminated after the 2006 season or immediately. Here's an early profile of the new park :

Question: In retractable roofs, you have to have artificial turf, right? It would make sense obviosuly...but who knows...
They both have their advantages/disadvantages....

Man there are some sure intelligent people on this board with a good sense of choosing the right stadium to like! *bananadance*
sidthekid87 - February 1, 2006 05:53 AM (GMT)
there wouldnt ahve to be artificial turf..if im not mistaken Safeco is a retractable roof and it is grass..but i dont know..it would make the most sense
nath87 - February 1, 2006 06:08 AM (GMT)
I do like retractable roofs, as long as it cost me nothing. The Skydome was built with tax payers money. it cost over 600 million dollars *no*
I don't know how much they cost these days, but I sure wouldn't put that type of investement in a retractible roof unless I owned the yankees :P
hankaaron44 - February 2, 2006 04:22 AM (GMT)
Well, as u know, Nathan, being the Jays fans that we r, that when the roof is closed at the Rogers Centre, there is a big noticable difference.
If I owned a retractable roofed stadium, I would want not much of an atmostphere or crowd noise difference like Safeco Field. Maybe, it's the non-full dirt infield that's making everyone think the Rogers Centre is strange. Conisidering that we'll have the only stade left without a full dirt infield when the Twins get a new ballpark, our new improvements better be good !
Here, someone shove this picture into Ted Rogers face and beg hin to make it happen ( without it being too big a hassel converting the field into an Argos football one ) :

hankaaron44 - February 4, 2006 08:44 PM (GMT)
That reminds me, I better get myself one of those userbars because I;m the only here who doesn't have one yet !
sidthekid87 - February 9, 2006 06:58 AM (GMT)
hahha...u made short work of that..its a new internet fad and i will nto be sucked in!!!
CincyReds - February 11, 2006 11:47 PM (GMT)
I think retractable roofs are good in that they reduce rainouts, however always enclosed fields such as Tropicana I can not stand. I just can't enjoy it when it's indoors with no sun.
hankaaron44 - February 12, 2006 02:15 AM (GMT)
Me neither. If had to comment on a live braodcast on ESPN or something and they said I have 10 secs, I would simply say : It ( Tropicana Field ) Sucks !!!!!
How come u have

I bet if the poll were "Would you like to pay for the extra cost of a retractable roof stadium?" It would be like all no's.
And his sig actually was over the limit, understandable for a new member.
hankaaron44 - February 12, 2006 04:43 AM (GMT)
I concur with both your comments although u r a sig makeing goth, j/k
U know, a closed roof as I mentioned before, could be like this simile :
The 12th at Qwest Field as to football as closed roofs r to baseball.
BloodSuger - March 12, 2006 04:34 AM (GMT)
I like retractable roofs because, well like people say they reduce rainouts, and the atmosphere seems to change in a way when the roof is closed.
Big Willy Style - March 13, 2006 08:27 AM (GMT)
I guess I like retractable roofs. I mean, the kinda have to have one in Seatle, or just go with a straight up dome. If the Marlins can get a new stadium built, they also defenitely need a retractable roof or straight up dome to play in.
I guess, the region of your city is what matters. I don't think every team should have one, just the teams in areas that are mpst likely to get rain delays/rain outs (like Florida and Seatle).
hankaaron44 - March 13, 2006 08:18 PM (GMT)
This may be a Toronto bias but I think the Rogers Centre's retractable roof both fits in to the city's design and has a lot of sence why it's there. I mean we had a stadium ( Exhibition Stadium ) that had a lot of famous football games that were fogged. The Rogers Centre is near Lake Ontario and ever since that football team moved in, it makes perfect sence for them to play there. The team's name is the Toronto Argonauts. Anyone who knows a little bit of Greek mythology, might know the story of Jason and the Argonauts so taht's why we nickname them the Boatmen or the Scullers. When ever a team comes in to play the Argos at the Rogers Centre, we say that the ( fill team name here ) are rowing into the Boatmens hrbour for a game here today. So u get it ? Rogers Centre is near a body of water. At the edge of that water is a harbour.
Plus they've added a lot of football improvements to make it feel as if we are in an Argo museum full of Argos history, past and present, while watching a football game. The roof continually reminds us of those past games with a lot of fog.

What about the commissioner getting involved in deciding whether the roof should be opened or closed? What kind of crap is that? When he stepped in last year it pissed me off. Someone should have told him to put away his god robe.

As a commissioner, he has the right to tell Houston to open the dome if he feels it would give the Stros an unfair advantage. I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but he did have the right.

Actually, I don't think he does. Configurable park changes, such as lights, batter's eye, and retractable roofs, are adjusted by the home team based upon conditions necessitating the configuration changes as long as a reasonable effort is made to allow both teams the same number of innings for a configuration. This is how one team is prevented from using park configuration to give it an unfair edge.
It really is none of the commissioner's business. However, he has a history of ham-handedness, which is why I think he is the worst commissioner in my lifetime.
giddyupzil - March 17, 2006 12:38 AM (GMT)
I like them because Miller Park is a killer stadium, although the roof never works. >_<

Yes sir, I agree. If only " Bud " Selig could put the same amount of fire and wnthousiasm on the steroids scandal, then, Major League Baseball's image would be a lot better.
Here's how I picture it, and this is way off topic, but anyways, u know how the halfback on the Heisman Trophy is holder the football in one arm and stiff arming with the other arm ? Here's a pic :

Allan " Bud " Selig is the halfback and what he's doing is keeping the whole scandal arm's length away.

Miller Park is one of the nicest stadiums i have ever been too. It is just a well built, nice park.
I was there to see A-Rod's 400th HR against the brewers :D
