Title: Who REALLY deserved the 2003 Cy Young?

Rockshu - September 5, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
Well KTF has been whining at me for some reason and obviously I disagree with him. Here are the numbers:

Roy Halladay: 266 IP, 253 hits, 96 ER, 32 BB, 204 K's
= 22-7, 3.25 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 6.38 K/BB, 9 complete games, 2 shutouts

Pedro Martinez: 186.2 IP, 147 hits, 46 ER, 47 BB, 206 K's
= 14-4, 2.22 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 4.38 K/BB, 3 complete games, 0 shutouts

It's my personal opinion that the voters were right to give Halladay the Cy Young. Yes, Pedro had a MUCH better ERA, and that SHOULD be a deciding factor. However, the fact that Roy pitched 80 more innings than Pedro and kept incredible splits the entire time is more deserving. It's my opinion that 266 IP of a 3.25 ERA is more valuable to your team than 186 IP with a 2.22 ERA. If Pedro was forced to pitch an additional 80 innings do you think his ERA would have stayed at 2.22? Who knows, but I think fatigue would have caught up for sure. Pedro wins ERA by a lot, and barely takes WHIP and K's. Roy Halladay basically wipes the floor with Pedro in every other statistic.

Roy Halladay takes it.

Marlinschamps03 - September 5, 2007 02:13 AM (GMT)
Halladay definately.

TheHugeUnit - September 5, 2007 02:14 AM (GMT)
KTF thinks Pedro is the greatest pitcher of all time. I'm serious too.

I'll stick with the amn who won it.

22 wins!? It's gotta be Halladay

webgem924 - September 5, 2007 03:19 AM (GMT)
Halladay, the CGs, shutouts, and the k/bb ratio decided it for me

braveschopbraves - September 5, 2007 03:57 AM (GMT)
I'll stick with the guy who has an ERA of a whole run lower

Halladay... the k/bb ratio decided it for me

it didn't decide it when you wanted Wang for Cy young

BlueJaysfan - September 5, 2007 04:01 AM (GMT)
KTF, step back.

PAUL KONERKO 14 - September 5, 2007 07:45 PM (GMT)
Pedro Martinez, better WHIP and ERA and two more K's in 80 less innings.

soxfan#1 - September 5, 2007 09:24 PM (GMT)
Halladay here, but Pedro is one of the most dominant pitchers of all time when he was having his years.

To make it clear, I never said he would win it. Sabathia or Bedard will likely win it. All I said is Wang deserves more attention in the voting. I'm not saying Wang will win it, I don't even think he'll be in the top 3

who's the all-time leader in career ERA+? who holds the single season record for lowest WHIP? one of the 15 members of the 3000 K club with a couple seasons left still? I don't know if he's THE best, but top 5 for sure.
