Title: Whatever happened to the good ol days?
Description: ...of sports.

Seriously. I always hear stories about performance inhancement drugs to make injuries heal faster. About athletes being arrested for some stupid crime that they shouldn't have done in the first place. Or how about just athletes not setting a good example to children at all?

What happened to the old days of normal athletes, being a normal person, and playing the game they love?

I don't know that there was a "good old days" for athletes and other famous people. There was just less press coverage, less invasion of people's privacy by the press. Example: Mickey Mantle was widely known (and in later years admitted) to have cheated on his wife tons of times. Yet, he was never photographed leaving or entering a hotel with a woman, like A-Rod was.

We hold athletes up to impossible standards nowadays, then we get shocked and upset when we realize they are human and they make mistakes, too.

The "good ol days" are gone. Get used to it. The Steroid Era of baseball is now, and it is represented with a huge picture of Barry Bonds's ugly face.

I love how guys who played 60 years ago would have to have a second job unloading the docks in the offseason to help keep up with the rent.

People shouldn't look up to athletes as role models.... i never really got that.

It wasn't that long ago--I know that Mike Boddicker had a job similar to that in the early part of his career, and he pitched into the 1990's.

In a different era, perhaps it made more sense.

Times have changed. We should search for modern role models who demonstrate cultural awareness, technical savvy, patience and maturity...message forum moderators, for example. :D
