Title: Should DH be Banned from the Minors?
steveox - August 30, 2007 07:37 PM (GMT)
I think all players should learn to hit. One of these pitchers might be traded to the National League one day so i think every minor league team from A to AAA so dump the DH. I think pitchers should bat in the minors. If theres a man on base in scoring position manager has a choice to make. You can take your pitcher out put in a PH and see if he drives in a run or you can play it safe let him bat if hes pitching well. Manager can Make a double switch and take out the pitcher if he batting next inning. So i think they should dump the DH in the minors.

No.
Consider this. The Mariners have 2 good catchers at the AAA level. Neither are ready, and neither are below the AAA level either. They're Jeff Clement and Rob Johnson. So that they get everyday playing time, one DH's one day, and the other one catches. Otherwise, it's a total logjam.
Plus, the Minors have shitty attendance as it is. People wanna see offense, not your shitty minor league pitcher hitting.

Thats one more guy you can have getting regular at bats where at bats are so valuable. As CO said there might have a stocked postion and they do need ab its not fair to someone like Clement to sit every other day.

Well thats the Mariners problem.Suppose the Mariners get in the World Series then you need those pitchers to bat. Or if Mariners trade one of their pitchers to the national league team. If a Pitcher can hit he might be tradeable. Ever think of that?
Crushed Optimism - August 30, 2007 08:04 PM (GMT)
It's not like they've never hit in their life. They don't stand up there not knowing what they're doing. Every pitcher knows how to bunt, and that's all you can really expect from them. Guys like Willis and Zambrano are just naturally good hitters anyway.
Plus, a team isn't going to want to trade for a pitcher because he can hit....
If a team wants their Minor League pitchers to hit for some reason, they can DH them.

Any time an AL team is going to be using NL rules (Interleague, WS), the pitchers take batting practice for a few days before hand. That's all that's really necessary, since the team isn't expecting them to get on base. In fact, most teams prefer that their pitcher DOESN'T get on base so that they can rest in the dugout as opposed to pitching, running the bases, and then pitching again with no rest in between.

I think DH should be banned from the minor leagues. Why you think they dont use the DH in Little league, High School or even in college ball? I just think it shouldnt be used in the minors.

I maybe wrong (and someone please feel free to correct me if I am) but I believe that if a National League team's minor league affiliate is playing another National League team's minor league affiliate, then the pitcher bats. If a National League team's minor league affiliate is playing an American League team's minor league affiliate (regardless of location), then the DH is used.

You can use the DH wherever you want (other than the NL).

I don't really see a reason why it should be banned in the minors...I don't think that's a big issue at all.

i think the DH should be thrown away altogether that way you dont have guys like Papi and Hafner able to just sit and hit...i want to see true athletes out there plus small ball is more fun IMO and managing runs in
but if theyre gonna keep it in the majors i guess might as well keep it in the minors

Young Kids who come out of High school go to A Ball. Pitchers theres better learn how to hit a 85MPH Fastball.

Look the NFL Changed the rules into a more defensive game than an offensive game. TDs sell more than Field goals. Like Back in the 1980s and beyond it was more an offensive game cause of easy pass interferance calls back then. Now if you bump into a reciver as well you play the ball its an incompleate pass no flag. Back in the 80s if you bump into a reciver while ball is up the air out comes the flag and its almost automatic. Now Baseball is a hitting game more than a pitching game like it was before 1972. Before 1972 The mound used to be 16 inches high and you had dominate pitching like Bob Gibson,Sandy Kofax,Jim Palmer and Don Drysdale. But now you have so many Homerun hitters the mound needs to be raised again from 10 inches to 14 inches. And DH needs to be abolished during interleague play and World Series play. So if american league pitchers need to hit during interleague and World Series play you better start teaching them while theyre in the minors.
