Rockies' Baker on DL after suffering mild concussion, cut cheek from pitch

DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies called up Ian Stewart from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday and placed infielder Jeff Baker on the 15-day disabled list.

Stewart was scheduled to make his major league debut against the Chicago Cubs, starting at third base. The 22-year-old was hitting .304 with 15 home runs and 65 RBIs for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

"We're bringing up a guy that's done a good job and has some barrel to his bat," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's been on a nice run, and he seemed to be the fit for the time. Whether the opportunity is short or long, we'll figure that out as we go along."

Baker was hit in the head with a pitch by Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis on Friday night. Baker suffered a mild concussion and a cut on his cheek.

"That's as good as we could have hoped for with the circumstances we're dealing with," Hurdle said of Baker's injury. "Anytime you see that happen, you go to a scary place. He's pretty resilient."

Wow, good that it wasn't a more serious injury. Hurdle is right - when you see a player get hit in the head, you get a serious knot in your tummy, knowing it could be really bad.

I think you should get ejected from hitting someone in the head, even if unintentional.
