the small 2 is a squared symbol.
How can I figure out the foiling thing with the (xx+xx)(xx+xx)

there is some shortcut.

so this?:

10-9y-2y²

rearange it to

-2y²-9y+10

you know since the equation begins with -2y² that you will have

(-2y+???)(1y+???)

then just expirement with things that multiply out to 10 and you get:

(-2y+-5)(1y+-2)

but that comes out to -2y^2+1y+10

^2 means squared.
