Title: Showalter May Join Indians Organization

CLEVELAND -- Former Rangers manager Buck Showalter might be joining the Indians organization as a special assistant to general manager Mark Shapiro.

Showalter, who lives in Dallas, would do some scouting for the Tribe, but his main responsibility would be to help set up the club's proposed Spring Training facility in Goodyear, Ariz., a source told MLB.com.

The Indians are expected to move their Spring Training site from Winter Haven, Fla., to Goodyear in 2009. The plan is dependent on funding from the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority.

Shapiro confirmed he has been in talks with Showalter, but he said an official agreement hasn't been reached.

"We're talking to Buck Showalter about an advisory role to [manager] Eric [Wedge] and myself," Shapiro said. "It's something he is considering, but nothing has been committed to."

An official announcement on the matter could come after next week's general managers meetings in Naples, Fla., the source said. The source also said the Indians came after Showalter at Wedge's urging.

Showalter, 50, has a career managerial record of 882-833 (.514) with the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Rangers. He guided Texas to an 80-82 record in 2006 and was dismissed shortly after the season ended.
