Title: Brian Giles: Could Hit Leadoff In '07

Update: The likelihood of Giles moving to the leadoff spot in 2007 is increasing, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Recommendation: It is looking more and more like 2006 leadoff man Dave Roberts will not be a Padre in 2007. The Union-Tribune says that Giles and second baseman Josh Barfield are the top candidates to hit leadoff if Roberts does not return. Giles might even move from right to left field, depending on what other moves the Padres make.

Im guessing that Brian Giles will not hit lead off. Speed is too much a part of sd's game to let Giles lead off.

I think this is there way of pushing barfield.

he is not fast enough to be in that position

Leadoff isn't all about speed you guys, it's about seeing lots of pitches and working the count. High OBP is more important than speed. Giles has a massive OBP and hits lots of doubles, so I don't see why not.

Exactly.

But it really depends on what the Padres this offseason. If they get 1 or 2 power bats in the to put in the middle of the lineup to go along with Adrian Gonzalez, I'm pretty sure they'll test Giles in the leadoff spot. But if the Padres to get a great bat like a Soriano/Lee/etc., they'll more than likely put Giles in the 3 hole again.

And if they don't get a power bat, they'll get some cheap top of lineup hitter and keep Giles at 3 hole.

If the Jays don't re-sign Cat, i have a weird feeling the Padres will go after him and put him in the 2hole and let Barfield leadofff.

Throw my idea of Barfield in leadoff out the door, he got traded.

Where Giles bats in the batting depends basically on whether the Padres get a power bat or not.

I'd rather see the Padres keep Dave Roberts unless they get a big bat to replace him.
