Title: BIGGEST NEED?
braveschopbraves - October 28, 2006 04:53 AM (GMT)
our SP was almost as bad as our RP last year....
and we have no one with speed besides Petey Orr
But I say we need RP the most... solid RP.... PROVEN..... not journeymen
Not SP cause Hampton will return and Hudson couldn't have a worse year than last year

i'm not expecting much out of hampton.
i voted RP..anyone consistent please.

I think the Braves need that leadoff man. They really seemed to miss having Furcal and his speed in that leadoff role in 2006.
I would say a more consistent bullpen is also needed.

*ATL* Their bullpen is the weak spot in the '06 season. *ATL*
ntvallstar2 - November 5, 2006 04:56 PM (GMT)
If they wan to succed in the 07 season they need a better bullpen
NYYanks21318 - November 5, 2006 11:24 PM (GMT)
yeah, that is what they really need.

Hey 68vert, go introduce yourself.

Without a doubt, its gotta be relief pitching.
Our starting pitching was OK, but picture this rotation next year:
1. John Smoltz (the Braves' new age-less wonder)
2. Tim Hudson (hopefully returned to his Oakland form)
3. Mike Hampton (fresh off of elbow surgery at the end of the 05 season)
4. Chuck James (showed great potential in 06)
5. Horacio Ramirez or Kyle Davies (neither are great, both are frequently hurt, but either would make a solid 5 guy)
Thats a formidable rotation. As for a lead-off hitter, that wasn't the Braves problem this year. The scored the 5th most runs in the entire MLB (2nd most in the NL) without a reliable lead-off hitter. Scoring wasn't their problem, it was definitely pitching.
Moving either Ramirez or Davies to the bullpen would give the pen a good long relief pitcher, and the closer spot is filled by Wickman, but what else do they have? Villarreal is the only other guy in the pen who doesn't make me hold my breath with every pitch he throws, but he's far from perfect. They really need to get a good set-up man, and some solid middle relief.
