Title: New Direction

sfgkml - October 8, 2006 06:28 AM (GMT)
The Giants need to go in a new direction during the offseason and stop signing oldies. I'm glad that management let go of Alou as the manager, but I hope we also get someone who can do a better job than he has. As for the eleven free agents, we need to use that money to sign someone who can be the face of the Giants franchise and carry the ballclub. I like having Cain as the ace and one of the ballplayers that defines the Giants. The kid is amazing and can be even better when he is on. Hopefully he can do way better next season and establish himself dominantly in the MLB world. I do not see the Giants making the playoffs next year which will probably be a rebuilding one, but if they do anything like the Marlins do, I will be happy. Go Giants!

terrorist of sports - October 8, 2006 06:36 AM (GMT)
I agree, but im afraid that you are giong to have bonds back one more year. Cain hardly got any recognition for roty, even though he may have been a top 3 contender in my opinion. The giants deffiantely need a younger team.

sfgkml - October 9, 2006 03:00 AM (GMT)
I certainly hope that the Giants management isn't blind enough to sign Bonds back. If they do, the Giants management will really need some new people to direct the team. And yeah, I think Cain should get serious consideration for ROTY too, that streak he went on before the season ended was just crazy. He had one or two earned runs in how many innings was it, 40+? Cain really does need to be the ace of the team next year and the whole team has to get younger. I would like to see the Giants pull off the Marlins of '06. Sure they didn't get to the playoffs, but they were a very respectable team that still won ballgames.

Santana - October 9, 2006 04:44 AM (GMT)
hows felipe doing? is he good enough to stay or can they possibly get giradi?

ntvallstar2 - October 9, 2006 04:45 AM (GMT)
I want the yanks to get girardi but they will probably get pinella

TheHugeUnit - October 9, 2006 01:43 PM (GMT)
You guys interested in Jaret Wright?

sfgkml - October 9, 2006 06:51 PM (GMT)
I would like to see the Giants sign Gary Matthews, Jr.

2002NLChamps - October 9, 2006 07:06 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Matthews Jr.'s name has come up a bit. I just hope he doesn't turn out like Randy Winn who also had a great contract year...

sfgkml - October 9, 2006 07:42 PM (GMT)
That is very true, but we also have to remember that Matthews, Jr. was also an All-Star this year. But yes, I wouldn't want another Randy Winn. Also, I hope we sign some other free agent, like Alfonso Soriano. haha, yeah right huh?

2002NLChamps - October 10, 2006 11:17 PM (GMT)
Soriano would fit pretty well--we need a 2B if we let Durham go.

mpic92 - October 10, 2006 11:31 PM (GMT)
Come on Giants fans... were you really expecting Winn to have another great year like he did when he first came to SF? Also, didn't an injury hinder him later in the season.

No, but we aren't the ones who signed him, Sabean did. And we don't like Sabean!

Schmidt is getting older and will be gone.
Bonds is old and should be gone.
Durham is old and should be gone soon.
Visquel is old and should be gone soon.
Alou is old and should be gone.
Benitez is old and should be gone.
Finley is old and should be gone.
Stanton is old and should be gone.
Kline is old and should be gone soon.

Your team is old, and I mean really old. Well, your bullpen and rotation seem to be going through a youth movement, but your positions players are ancient. Within the next 2 years it's going to undergo some serious personel changes, hopefully for the better. How is your farm?

2002NLChamps - October 13, 2006 10:17 PM (GMT)
Bad, but what did you expect with us trading all our draft picks away?

Here's the players we will have if we resign no one:

C Mike Matheney
1B Travis Ishikawa
2B Kevin Frandsen
SS Omar Vizquel
3B Tomas De La Rosa
RF Todd Linden
CF Freddie Lewis
LF Randy Winn

SP Matt Morris
SP Noah Lowry
SP Matt Cain
SP Brad Hennessey
SP John Sanchez

CL Armando Benitez
SU Tim Worrell
RP Vin Chulk
RP Scott Munter
RP Jack Taschner
RP Kevin Correia

But on the bright side we have TONS of money to buy people with.
Bonds $18 mil
Feliz $4 mil
Durham $7 mil
Alou $6 mil
Finley $7 mil
Schmidt $10 mil
Kline $3 mil
Hillenbrand $5 mil
Stanton $1 mil
(Total: $61 million!!!)

So, if Bonds wants to come back he does for $7 mil. Feliz gets a raise to $6 mil (we need a 3B that badly). Alou, Finley gone for sure. Schmidt probably goes. Durham probably goes because the front office is really high on Frandsen. Kline probably stays for $2 mil. Stanton probably stays for $2 mil. Hillenbrand probably stays for $6 mil.

So we cut $41 mil in salary and are probably going to spend $15 in FA. Soriano maybe? Probably not...my guess is that McGowan will be cheap and pay Matthews Jr. $8 mil or something like that.

Here is my guess at next year's team:

C Matheney $4 mil
1B Hillenbrand $6 mil
2B Frandsen
SS Vizquel $2 mil
3B Feliz $6 mil
LF Bonds $7 mil
CF Winn $7 mil
RF Matthews Jr. $8 mil

BN Alfonso, Linden, Lewis, Ellison, De La Rosa, Sweeney

SP Morris $8 mil
SP Lowry
SP Cain
SP Hennessey
SP Sanchez

CL Stanton $2 mil
SU Benitez $6 mil
SU Kline $2 mil
RP Worrell $2 mil
RP Scott Munter
RP Kevin Correia

Anyone who's salary I didn't post is near the minimum. So that team would cost around $65 million.

The one thing you can say about next year's Giants is that the starting pitching and defence are very good. Other than that we have one of the worst offences in the league and probably the worst bullpen.

Time to rebuild...

sfgkml - October 17, 2006 08:31 PM (GMT)
Pineilla probably didn't want to be the Giants' manager because he knows how Sabean runs the place. OLD GUYS > young guys is Sabean's theory, and Lou obviously doesn't want that. He's got the Cubs seriously going after Alfonso Soriano now!

sidthekid87 - October 17, 2006 08:52 PM (GMT)
and if the rumours are right AROD..lol..Sweet lou must be sweet talking cubbys management

sfgkml - October 17, 2006 09:31 PM (GMT)
Seriously dude.. I want someone like Lou as our manager. Dang!

you can have Dusty back ;)

sfgkml - October 17, 2006 11:30 PM (GMT)
HAHA, that's a joke. He's cursed now cause he was with the Cubs...

2002NLChamps - October 18, 2006 10:15 PM (GMT)
Joe Girardi would be nice, he's probably used to young teams by now.

sfgkml - October 19, 2006 02:13 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I wouldn't mind Girardi, but we would actually need to get a younger team first... that's probably what drove Pineilla away: the fact that Sabean still believes that only experience wins ballgames...

sfgkml - October 27, 2006 06:52 AM (GMT)
Looks like we've signed Bochy.

NateFizzle - October 27, 2006 08:21 PM (GMT)
Good luck with Bochy. At least now the Padres don't have to worry about him messing up during the postseason. I can't believe he would leave all of a sudden.

sfgkml - October 27, 2006 11:58 PM (GMT)
Well after interviewing with other clubs I'm not too sure how receptive the Padres management would be to keep him. haha, it's like an insult. But then weren't the Padres looking to get rid of him and Towers anyway?

Hopefully the Giants can worry about the postseason at all...

Crushed Optimism - October 29, 2006 02:13 AM (GMT)
Not signing Bonds will be a step foreward for the Giants. It's time for them to finally start over.If you guys play your cards right, you could be a good team again in a couple of years, but we all knew that the old team would crumble someday. :/

Crz4mets2 - October 29, 2006 02:51 AM (GMT)
The Giants just gotta take a leap foward, and let go of memories.

Get Bonds out and start rebuilding.

sfgkml - November 8, 2006 11:02 PM (GMT)
Recent indications are that the Giants aren't going to sign Bonds. I can't wait till he signs with another team!!!

I had a feeling he wasn't goiing to come back to San Fransisco or any NL team for that mattter. He needs to DH.

2002NLChamps - November 9, 2006 02:41 PM (GMT)
As bad as he did last year I think I'd rather have him for $8 million than Matthews Jr. Just seems like too much to spend for a person with one good year.

sfgkml - November 13, 2006 06:33 AM (GMT)
Bonds would never sign for $8 million.

sfgkml - November 15, 2006 07:45 PM (GMT)
I recently read a rumor about the Mets pursuing Lugo as a second basemen. I certainly hope that the Giants chase Soriano, but I highly doubt it at this point. Why not go for Lugo as a second basemen? I think that'd be a great DP combo- Lugo and Vizquel. Plus, if the Giants are pursuing Pierre aggressively as the rumors say, then we'll have a pretty good amount of speed.

Of course that'd be the ideal price to sign him at, but what I'm saying is that he wouldn't accept $8 million unless it was his only offer and the season was about to start or something. He thinks he deserves way above $8 million.

2002NLChamps - November 16, 2006 01:55 AM (GMT)
I think Bonds is worth around $5 million and the only reason he'll get any more than that is from the name...but you're right about that, he's too selfish to give the giants a discount <_<

Yeah. And now I hear that the Padres might be interested in Bonds. Haha, that's very interesting.. not sure how the fans will deal with having Barry on their team.

Any response to having Lugo as our second basemen? I think that Sabean should really try it... Lugo has good speed and if we get Pierre, we'd have really good speed at the top of the order.

Pierre
Vizquel
Lugo

Or some sort of order of the three...

The ideal would be to go after Soriano, but I highly doubt Sabean is willing to, sadly..

2002NLChamps - November 16, 2006 09:01 PM (GMT)
Soriano will get around $16 mil / year which I doubt McGowan is willing to pay. Lugo is interesting BUT Sabean is very high on Kevin Frandsen (who is hitting around .420 in the AZ fall league right around now!).

Pierre has a chance of becomming a Giant, I've heard Dave Roberts' name thrown around a bit more. But whoever it is Freddie Lewis will probably end up on the bench (I was hoping to see him get a bit more time).
