It basically is the holy ground for the main 3 religons. Muslims and Jews have been fighting forever over the land.

Someone told me once that the problems between Palestinians and Israeli Jews goes back to Biblical times....that it started when Sarah was too old to have a baby with her husband Abraham, so she told him to have a baby with her maid, Hagar. Hagar had a son, Ishmael. Then Sarah later had a son, Isaac. Isaac was recognized as Abraham's true son, and Hagar and Ishmael were sent away. And Isaac represents the Israeli Jews, and Ishmael the Palestinians....don't know if this is all true, but I thought it was interesting.
