The Red Sox, making another move to bolster their late-inning relief, have reached terms free-agent right-hander Julian Tavarez on a two-year contract with a vesting option, FOXSports.com has learned.

The deal is contingent on Tavarez passing a physical.
Tavarez, 32, will join fellow right-handers Mike Timlin, Guillermo Mota and Rudy Seanez among the Red Sox's revamped setup corps, giving the team further protection if closer Keith Foulke does not return to form.

Foulke, 33, had arthroscopic surgery last July 7 to repair cartilage in his left knee, then was shut down for the season in late September. Tavarez was 19-for-26 in save opportunities the past three seasons with the Pirates and Cardinals.

The Mets expressed early interest in Tavarez, but reportedly were put off by his request for a four-year deal. Tavarez pitched effectively in two seasons with the Cardinals, averaging 76 appearances and posting a 2.89 ERA.

I am so psyched right now, it's not even the least bit funny. *bananadance*

Looks like the bullpen is going to be pretty good, now with Paps in the rotation (he'll be there) and possibly losing Arroyo and Clement to trades for someone (I'm just assuming this), I think the Sox could do good next year, they just need to keep Manny.

Nooooooooooooo.

I wanted him on the Yankees. Imagine an October bullpen with Taverez, Dotel, Farnsworth, and Rivera. Well you know what? You can stop imagining now. :)

Good move by the Sox. And I'm sure Hansen would be in the bullpen too, so him and Taverez would set up Foulke with Timlin in there too.

Also, Delcarmen could come up this year.

Delcarmen was up for 2 stints last year, and looked really good, IMHO.

Nice move by the Sox. You lnow last year the yanks and Sox had awful Pens. This year they could be better than the starters on both clubs. Afterall we both have brittle aces.

Nice is he the pitcher from the Cardinals?

Yes he is.

Yes nice I love this pitcher for some reason, when he played for St. Louis something about him. Even though he blew a couple games when the Sox played him lol.

BigPapi06 - January 11, 2006 09:54 PM (GMT)
I loved watching him come up in the Indians system (when the Charlotte Knights were affiliated with Cleveland back in the late 1990's).

simpsons123 - January 11, 2006 10:04 PM (GMT)
I didn't wanted him in Yankees. Because, he sometimes becomes psycho during game, he's a bad addition to clubhouse attitude and I think it'll take long time for him to get used to AL. Just like Dotel.

You must be crazy *mallet* I would never want him in a Yankee uniform he is an explosion waiting to happen. I seriously didn't want him on the Yankees but this is a good pick-up for the Red Soxs

He's a headcase. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

Yes he is.

Yes he said he didn't want anything more than 2 so he can go back and sign for more money since eveyone that wanted him had gotten other pitchers and his value decreased

bosoxdiehard - January 12, 2006 04:55 AM (GMT)
Still he helps the bullpen a lot. I'm not worried about the pen anymore.

TheHugeUnit - January 12, 2006 04:57 AM (GMT)
O man i can't wait for a fight to break out now at the Yankees red soxs games Farnsworth vs Tavarez who would win?

bosoxdiehard - January 12, 2006 04:59 AM (GMT)
I think Tavarez...but its close.

TheHugeUnit - January 12, 2006 05:02 AM (GMT)
Are you joking me Farnsworth will lift Tavarez over his head and throw in the dugout. What is Tavarez going to do punch a wall?

He is a headcase, but so was Sheffield at times.

Taverez was an pretty good pitcher, and again, more pitching can't hurt. I know he is a headcase, but for two years he might have been worth the shot.
