Baseball historians have come to a near consensus on this..
It's Rogers Hornsby, hands down.
Its funny people keep mentioning Josh Gibson, when there is NO validity in anything he ever did. Its unfortunate, but that's just the way it is.

I am the next baseball historian.

I believe if Josh Gibson would have played Major League ball for all his career, he would be the best damn player there ever was, but that wasn't the case, anyway, he's easily the best right handed hitter. Bar None.

Hornsby's got to be up there somewhere...probably the best righty hitter for average of all time and had some power at 2nd base! How many 2nd basemen can produce like that?

Great player, but overrated. He had a very long career.
I'd have to say Hornsby, like Matt says he had power for a 2B and great average. But Gibson deserves some credit, he had to be at least as good as Ruth, probably better, but since the Negro Leagues didn't keep stats for awhile we can only assume that.

Cal Ripken Jr. was pretty good too.

haha..
On what basis?
Did you see him play? Do you know someone who did?
Most likely the answer to both of those questions is no, which means all you've heard is the tall tale that has become the career of Josh Gibson..
I'm sure you think Paul Bunyan was the greatest woodsman of all-time, as well.
