Title: Women love sports too!!

kyyankgrrl - June 7, 2006 09:23 PM (GMT)
Ok, I admit this Gripe will probably go over the heads of most of you - since you're guys - but here goes:

I just checked my email and I had an offer to subscribe to Yankees magazine. And part of the sales pitch was:

"A subscription to Yankees Magazine makes the perfect Father's Day gift!"

And once again, I am confronted with the fact that just because I like sports, I am constantly bombarded with sh*t that is targeted to MEN. I cancelled my Sports Illustrated subscription years ago because I could never figure out what anorexic, plastic boobed women in swimsuits had to do with SPORTS. The sports section of the newspaper is also where all the STRIP CLUB ads are.

And yet, at the same time, study after study has shown that women are some of the biggest fans of baseball, basketball, and football.

I hate when this sh*t happens. *supermad*

ugh ME TOO i know exactly what you mean! its so annoying whenever i'm talking to friends or whatever about baseball and they're all like huh?... like why do you know anything about or follow baseball... they all think its so wierd

I don't have a problem with sending a subscription to Yankees Magazine as a Father's Day gift....but did the Yankees organization make the same offer when MOTHER'S Day was approaching? I doubt it.

And to mlbaseball87.....One thing that bothers me so much on baseball boards is, unless you have a gender-specific name, other posters automatically ASSUME you're a guy!! I even had a guy once say he wanted to kick me in the balls....made me laugh, and I posted back that I didn't have any....and he responded "I didn't think so"....it never occurred to the moron that I was a WOMAN.

Element - June 17, 2006 02:27 PM (GMT)
All of that is called marketing. Why would they advertise sports mags subscriptions on mothers day? MOST mothers/women aren't interested. Now there is an exception to every rule. But in marketing, those exceptions get ignored.

kyyankgrrl - June 18, 2006 06:37 AM (GMT)
But that's not true, Ele. Particularly with the NFL, where research has shown that women are a huge part of the audience.

Look at games - any sport - on TV. The stands are FULL of women.

Element - June 18, 2006 06:41 AM (GMT)
Yeah, but sports is marketed to men because we make up the majority of the fans. No denying that.

It is like the home show, or the botanical gardens. Sure, men go there, but it is a woman thing.

kyyankgrrl - June 18, 2006 06:44 AM (GMT)
I know, you're right (better save that, I won't say it to you often!!). But it's just so frustrating sometimes.

Hmmmph.....I'd rather go to a Yankees or 49ers game ANY DAY over a stoopid flower show!!! :D

George Castanza - June 18, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
Women who love sports (of any kind) are awesome! that is one trait i look into... but you are right women are discrimnated agaisnt when come to sports marketing, but it is true that most fans are men. when ever i see a female at a met game they are almost 9 times outta 10 with their b/f /husband. The more fans the better in my opinion i dont care what gender they are.. i would to see women catch up to men in the population of the fanbase (for any sport) that would be super ;)

Same thing bothers me. Esp on the MLB board, people assume I'm a man (which i'm not) and when referring to me, they're like HE said whatever or 'i disagree with him' i'm just like GET MY GENDER RIGHT! lol
at least your screen name really shows that you are a girl... mine is more masculine. oh well, sometimes it's funny when people think i'm a boy :D

The funny and coincidental thing about this topic is there is a topic on another forum that makes me realize women like sports, like soccer.

I just posted the link to these pics since some people might not like them.

But yeah, time to follow soccer, lol.

And on subject, yeah, I do think women aren't really precieved to be sports fan's, but there are plenty of women that do follow sports. Its just that in marketting, they can't please everyone, they have to please the majority, and happens to be men in the case of sports.

kyyankgrrl - June 19, 2006 08:43 PM (GMT)
The funny thing is, I can only name a small handful of men I know who are baseball fans....but I can name a LOT of women who love MLB.

kyyankgrrl - June 28, 2006 02:02 AM (GMT)
Looks like I was on to something....

Think maybe these women want to buy some stuff?

LONDON (Reuters) - Record numbers of women are watching the World Cup soccer tournament, but advertisers have overlooked the trend and almost exclusively pitched male-skewed brands using familiar methods.

"It's a new phenomenon, which has been undervalued and underestimated," said Maurice Levy, chief executive of Publicis Groupe, the world's fourth-largest advertising and marketing services conglomerate.

"We've certainly missed an opportunity."

Television viewership data from around the world provided to Reuters shows that 39 percent of the tournament's audience so far has been female. That is the same percentage as for the entire 2002 World Cup, and by the time a champion is crowned in July, the figures are expected to be higher.

"We haven't even played the matches yet where the female share of viewing is likely to be the highest," said Kevin Alavy, the analyst for media-buying firm Initiative who compiled the TV data, explaining that more women tend to watch the later matches that determine the eventual winner.

"By the end of the tournament, the female share will be well in excess of 39 percent," he said.

Nevertheless, the bulk of World Cup advertising has centered on traditionally male consumer goods like beer, cars and electronics, and featured bawdy humor, men playing soccer, and bikini-clad women.

More than $1 billion will be spent on advertising during the tournament, analysts have estimated.

Well yeah, just because a woman understands and likes a sport, doesn't mean she's gone blind!!! Shoot, I'd love to be locked in the Yankees locker room after a game. But that doesn't mean I'm not a knowledgeable fan!!

And gimme a break......isn't there a thread on this board full of pics of Maria Sharapova's hoots??? And one with half-dressed women soccer "fans"???

terrorist of sports - June 29, 2006 03:48 AM (GMT)
just an update in proof of kyy being right: The mets/sox pregame, they interviewed people, and majority were females, and they knew what they were talking about, so its a good thing to see.

kyyankgrrl, I know exactly how you feel. I'm such a big fan of hockey and baseball, and I get very annoyed for instance when an avon magazine that I get that has leafs stuff in it that you can order says "his room's new highlight", and they have the sports stuff in the father's day edition and not the mother's day one(not that I'm a parent, just stating a fact about the mag.) Also I can't stand when people think I'm only a sports fan, because I want to get with the players themselves, or some such nonsense! I am a sports fan, plain and simple, that's it!

I think it's funny that if we love sports, we're not supposed to appreciate the players' looks. I know a strikeout from a ground-rule double AND I also like that A-Rod has a nice butt. What's wrong with that???

But the marketing-only-to-men stuff is insane. That's why I posted that article about the World Cup soccer....they're basically admitting they blew it by marketing only to men.

But Victorias Secret is a women's clothing store (they sell a few men's things, but not much).

By ignoring women as sports fans, businesses are only hurting themselves. Why would I want to buy a product just because a chick in a bikini is in the ad? That has zero appeal to me. When you count the number of women sports fans who feel that way, that's a lot of money a business is losing.

Yeah, I also find it funny, that we're not allowed to appreciate their looks. I know a lot of stuff about sports, and still find certain male athletes hot, just like guys find certain female athletes hot.

I couldnt agree with you more. I happen to think Barry Zito is gorgeous so when people hear me say that they dont believe I actually know anything about the game. Im a huge hockey fan too and every time I tell people that I like the Yankees and the Rangers they feel the need to quiz me to really see if I know anything. Its just annoying at this point.
